AR Rahman apologised to me, said he liked new ‘Humma Humma’ after dissing it: Badshah

Badshah has been behind remixing and revamping many popular songs from the 1990s and while some like “Kala Chashma” were appreciated by others, there have been others like “Gore Gore Mukhde” that were instantly rejected by the audience. In fact, when Badshah did his own rendition on AR Rahman’s song “Humma Humma” for the 2017 film OK Jaanu, Rahman openly criticised the song. But, if Badshah is to be believed, the composer apologised to him later for his harsh comments.

Talking to Radio Nasha, Badshah recalled that when he set out to make the new version of “Humma Humma” with Tanishk Bagchi, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. “With ‘Humma Humma’, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and that’s the best part. When you know exactly how you can flip a song, how you can turn it into a Badshah song but not taking away from the original song’s soul,” he said.

He then addressed that he faced a “lot of flak” for “Humma Humma” and shared, “When I did ‘Humma Humma’, I faced a lot of flak. Rahman sir was also very unhappy but then at an event, I remember, he called me and then he said ‘I am sorry. It took me time to realise it’s a good song. I was just unhappy because of…’ there were some things and that was probably the biggest validation that I wasn’t looking for but I got.”

In a 2017 interview with Hindustan Times, Rahman said that he wasn’t happy with the idea of a remake initially but eventually liked it. “I wasn’t happy with the idea, initially. I was really hesitant about it at the start… But Shaad (the film’s director) was insistent. He kept on asking if we could use the song. So I asked Tanishk to come up with the first four bars of the song, and I kind of liked the beat. It sounded good and a bit different,” he said.
