Top 10 Indian Cities With The Cleanest Air and Best AQI in 2024: Amid the ongoing smog crisis, New Delhi has demonstrated a slight improvement in air quality levels with an AQI of 379, which moved it from the ‘severe’ category to ‘very poor,’ according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on Thursday morning.
Following the festive season and the onset of the winter season, major cities, particularly across North India, are presently grappling with severe air pollution, with many of them reporting alarming levels of AQI categorized as ‘severe’ and ‘very poor.’
To address and navigate the hazardous pollution situation in Delhi, Environment Minister Gopal Rai drafted a letter to the central government on Wednesday, November 19, seeking clearance for artificial rain in the capital.
Interestingly, although many cities in India are currently grappling with severe air pollution, several other cities in India are experiencing relatively clean air with impressive AQI readings.

Notably, northeastern cities in India, such as Aizawl and Shillong, benefit from their elevated terrain and abundant greenery, which effectively filter pollutants from the air.
In addition to sustainable public practices and increased awareness, cities like Nagaon and Vijayapura experience lower levels of industrialization compared to larger urban centres.
This results in lower emissions from factories and vehicles while also promoting clean air quality, controlling pollution levels, and maintaining favourable AQI levels.
