Opposition Divided

PROSPECTS OF AN overall opposition agreement, on putting up common candidates against the Congress (I) in the Lok Sabha elections, further dimmed. The last serious effort by the Andhra Chief Minister, N T Rama Rao, to hammer out a formula for seat adjustments in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar between the major opposition parties failed.

Lok Sabha Nomination

INDEPENDENTS CONTINUED TO account for the bulk of over 500 nominations for the Lok Sabha elections as major political parties finalised their candidate lists for the 514 parliamentary constituencies. The 400-odd nominations on the second day were evenly spread across 20 states and nine Union Territories, with few important personalities filing papers.

Sri Lanka Attack

AT LEAST 130 Israeli Mossad-trained Sri Lanka police commandos and army men were killed in Jaffna’s northern province during a major attack by Tamil militants of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO). Sixty police commandos died in a “Lebanon-style” police station explosion at Chavakachcheri, while 70 soldiers were gunned down near Kaithady. Militants seized arms of American, Chinese, Israeli, and South African origin.

EC Ban Ignored

THE MADHYA PRADESH government appeared to violate Election Commission directives by showering pre-poll gifts on voters. They announced extending benefits to “backward castes”, including 25 per cent reservations in jobs and professional institutions, subject to economic considerations. The state government also introduced multiple measures benefiting women, particularly promising free education.
