The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution to establish a High Court bench in Kurnool. Minister of Law and Justice N Md Farooq moved the resolution in the House which was passed unanimously by Speaker C Ayyannapatrudu.
CM N Chandrababu Naidu said on the floor of the Assembly on Thursday that the resolution, which has already been approved by the state Cabinet, would be sent to the Centre. He said that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre has also “responded positively to the proposal”.
“It was our election promise that we will set up a High Court bench in Kurnool and we have approved it,’’ the CM said.
The TDP had rejected Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s three-captial decentralised development proposal with administrative capital in Visakhapatnam, Legislative capital in Amaravati, and judicial capital in Kurnool. Naidu said that his government is committed to the comprehensive development of the state, and announced that Visakhapatnam in North Andhra, and Kurnool and Tirupati in Rayalaseema region will see more development.
After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh shared a common High Court in Hyderabad until December 2018. A dedicated High Court for Andhra Pradesh began functioning from Amaravati from January 1, 2019.
Claiming that the state did not witness any development over the past five years due to the “faulty policies” of the previous government in the name of three capitals, CM Naidu reminded that even as an Opposition party, the TDP had convinced the people of Visakhapatnam and Kurnool that Amaravati is the state’s capital.
“Comprehensive development of the state is possible only with TDP. We have done it earlier and will do it now,” Naidu said.
Recalling TDP founder N T Rama Rao, Naidu said that he had envisioned diverting Krishna River waters to Rayalaseema and as part of it had launched projects like Telugu Ganga, Handri-Neeva and Nagari-Galeru projects. “Only the TDP-led NDA government can complete these projects,’’ Naidu said. He also announced that subsidies will be revived for farmers to encourage drip irrigation and 300 acres have been allocated for a drone hub in Kurnool district’s Orvakallu.
