An African national Thursday allegedly died by suicide inside Sunny Enclave police post at Kharar after he was arrested for the alleged murder of his woman friend.
A judicial inquiry was marked into the incident to find out whether the incident had happened due to the negligence of any police personnel.
Sources said Saviour Chikpola, a national of Tanzania, was arrested by the police on Wednesday after it was established that he had killed his woman friend Nuru Maria, from Zambia.
Her body was found in her rented apartment in Crown City, Kharar, on November 14.
The preliminary investigation suggested that she had died naturally but her post-mortem report on November 18 revealed injuries to her throat which indicated that she was murdered.
Police launched an investigation on the basis of the post-mortem report and zeroed in on Saviour Chikpola. On Wednesday, the Kharar (city) police booked Chikpola under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and arrested him.
Chikpola was lodged in the lock-up in Sunny Enclave police post where he committed suicide.
Both friends, Chikpola and Nuru Maria were first-year students of a private university at Ghruan. The motive of the murder was not clear yet.
SP (Rural) Manpreet Singh told The Indian Express that they were looking into the matter.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Deepak Parekh said that they were investigating why Chikpola killed Maria.
The SSP added that the preliminary investigation suggested that Maria was not happy with Chikpola’s friendship with other women. “We are conducting further investigation and soon find the reason for the crime,” the SSP added.
