“Next time it won’t be a stone, but a bullet” — This isn’t the first time a journalist has heard such a threat — and it’s unlikely to be the last. However, not everyone is easily intimidated; some go to extraordinary lengths to uncover the truth and Joy Bag (Manoj Bajpayee) is one such fearless journalist. The official teaser of director Kanu Behl’s Despatch is out, promising a compelling dive into the dark valleys of investigative journalism.
The 87-second promo video opens with the shattering of window panes in Joy’s apartment as he shares a drink with someone. Startled, he retreats to a corner, only to discover that massive rocks are being hurled at his windows. Moments later, a call from a private number warns him: “Pack up and go home. NOW!” Unshaken by the threat, Joy remains resolute and continues his pursuit of the truth.

“I can have six stories; but what’s most valuable is information,” says a character, emphasising the vital role ethics play in journalism. As the teaser unfolds, it reveals not only the dangers Joy faces in his professional life but also the personal challenges that weigh on him. When it’s revealed that his latest scoop revolves around a scam worth Rs 8,000 crore, the stakes escalate, promising a nail-biting narrative. “You will be slapped with so many cases Joy sir, it’ll take you seven generations and 150 years to fight them,” sneers a powerful man. Joy, however, responds with a chillingly confident, “Once the story is out…” before the teaser cuts to his sinister laugh.
“News has turned digital, leaving veteran crime journalist Joy at the cusp of irrelevance. Determined to break the next big story and refashion his complicated personal life, Joy embarks on a relentless odyssey through the heart and gut of Mumbai, stumbling into its darkest corners,” reads Despatch’s official synopsis on IMDb. Written by Ishani Banerjee and Kanu Behl, Despatch is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and presented by RSVP Movies. While the movie’s cinematography is handled by Siddharth Diwan and it’s edited by Samarth Dixit. Despatch will premiere on ZEE5 on December 13.
