Two fishermen went missing as an Indian fishing vessel collided with a Navy submarine about 70 nautical miles off Goa’s coast Thursday.
In a statement on Friday, the Indian Navy said 13 crew members were aboard the fishing vessel at the time of the collision. Two fishermen are still reported missing.
The Navy has launched a coordinated search and rescue operation with six ships and aircraft.
“Eleven crew have been rescued so far. Search and rescue efforts for the remaining 2 crew members of Marthoma are in progress and are being coordinated with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai. The cause of the incident is being investigated,” a spokesperson of the Navy said.
The submarine was in transit along the west coast. The Navy said additional assets including from the Coast Guard have been diverted to the area to augment the rescue efforts.
