THE BADAUN police have registered an FIR against four engineers of the Public Works Department (PWD) in connection with the death of three men whose car plunged off an “incomplete” bridge into the Ramganga River in Bareilly on early Sunday.
Police said the accident took place on the Bareilly-Badaun border when the victims were travelling from Gurugram in Haryana to Bareilly to attend a function, using Google Maps for directions. The regional officer of Google Maps has also been “brought under the scope of investigation but his name is yet to be included in the FIR,” PTI reported. Police identified the deceased as Amit Singh (33), his friend Vivek Chauhan (35) and his brother Nitin (30), all hailing from Uttar Pradesh and residents of Gurugram.
The case against four engineers posted at the PWD’s Regional Division in Budaun and others was registered Monday by the Nayab Tehsildar of Dataganj tehsil under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC. The named accused are junior engineers Mohammad Arif and Abhishek Kumar, additional engineers Ajay Gangwar and Maharaj Singh, police said. Circle Officer (Baduan) Krishna Kumar Tiwari that a detailed investigation is underway.
The incomplete bridge spans the Ramganga, from Dataganj in Badaun till Faridpur in Bareilly. Police said that on Sunday, some residents village noticed a car below a section of the bridge that is not connected. Upon spotting three people inside, they alerted the police, who took them to a hospital, where they succumbed.
A Google spokesperson said in a statement, “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families. We’re working closely with the authorities and providing our support to investigate the issue.”
