Javeri Bazaar workshop: 18-year-old dies, another injured as 250-kg jewellery rolling mill machine falls on them

An 18-year-old goldsmith died after a 250-kg jewellery rolling mill machine fell on him and his co-worker, who was grievously injured, at a workshop in south Mumbai. The police said the two were sleeping when two other workers, who were playing on the other side, accidentally hit the machine, which fell on the victims. The incident took place on Sunday.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Anupam Tapan Ghosh while the injured was identified as Soumya Roy. Both are from West Bengal who worked with seven others — Ghanshyam Kusum Santra, Mangal alias Kajal Pannalal Mandal, Swarup Ghosh, Sameem Chaudhari, Parth Sarathi Mandal, Sovanlal Kole and S K Anwar Ali — at the workshop.

The nine workers, all goldsmiths, worked and lived in the workshop at Telgulley in Javeri Bazaar. The jewellery rolling mill machine is placed at the centre of the workshop with the workers working on either side of the machine.

“On Sunday, the workers said they had an off so after relaxing the whole day, they all had dinner at night after which they were lying on the floor,” a police officer said.

At midnight, two workers started playing on the other side of the machine during which their feet accidentally hit the machine, which crashed on Ghosh and Roy, who were sleeping.

Ghosh lost consciousness as the machine fell on his head while Roy sustained injuries on his hand. The two were rushed to GT hospital where Ghosh was declared dead on arrival.

The LT Marg police were informed who went to the spot and recorded the statement of the injured. A case was registered against the two workers who hit the machine and the owner of the workshop Mansoor Ali Liyakat Ali Sheikh. The two owners of the room Uttam Majhi and Ajit Chedda have also been booked.

“The owner of the workshop has been booked as he did not provide safe or secure accommodation for the goldsmiths apart from the workshop. Additionally, he did not ensure that the machine was placed safely in the workshop,” a police officer said.
