A gas leakage from a Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) pipe on J M Road in Shivajinagar sparked panic among residents on Friday. No casualties were reported in the incident.

The control room of the Pune Fire Brigade received a call regarding leakage of gas from an MNGL pipe near Shubham hotel on the J M Road around 11.45 am.
Soon a team of fire brigade rushed to the spot. Fire brigade and MNGL technicians tried to stop the gas leakage.

Fire brigade officials said that gas leakage started after an MNGL pipeline was accidentally damaged during a sewer channel work being done by Pune Municipal Corporation in the lane near Shubham hotel.

The gas leak radiated fear due to which a few shops and hotels in the area shut their operations for some time. Meanwhile, the MNGL technicians closed the main valve of the damaged pipeline.

Festive offer

“After the main valve of the damaged pipeline was shut, the gas leak was comparatively slowed down. However, gas was still present in the channel. Shortly after that, the PMC employees resumed their work which ignited fire in the channel due to JCB machine’s shock. Firemen poured water and controlled the flames.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt in this mishap,” said Praveen Ranadive of the Erandwane Station of the Pune Fire Brigade.
