Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday won applause from some southern MPs who have often expressed unhappiness over the use of Hindi for official communications. Vaishnaw, who in the past too had made efforts to learn Tamil words and their correct pronunciations, was replying to a question raised by DMK’s T Sumathy over the railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in Tamil Nadu. “I would like to pronounce Chennai Egmore (station) as Chennai Elumbur. So, Chennai Elumbur station is one of the Amrit Bharat stations. It is being developed very well,” said the minister. His effort to pronounce the station name in the local dialect pleased the members from the state, who thumped the desk to express it.

Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, S P Singh Baghel seldom leaves an opportunity to show his enthusiasm for sports activities. Last weekend, when he visited an Eklavya Model Residential School in Dahod, an aspirational district in Gujarat, he played volleyball with the students. Recently, he rode a motorbike in the Delhi cantt area when he attended a bike rally event organised on the occasion of National Milk Day.
