Didn’t get support from Bengal police for Jan Sanwai event: NCW

The National Commission for Women alleged that the Kolkata Police and West Bengal police did not “cooperate” with the NCW for “Jan Sunwai” meetings for women from December 11 to December 13.

According to Archana Majumdar, a member of the NCW, the Jan Sunwai aims to address women’s grievances at grassroots levels. The hearing aims to “resolve” pending cases related to women’s issues and provide immediate solutions wherever possible, she said.

“At the 11th hour, we got an intimation from a senior Kolkata Police officer, but by then we had made all the necessary arrangements and informed the police that changing the venue would no longer be possible,”  Majumdar  told The Indian Express.

Majumdar had earlier taken to social media to claim that the police administration initially didn’t support them.

“… This lack of support is deeply disappointing. This initiative is a vital step toward justice and protecting women’s rights. We urge @MamataOfficial to support this important initiative,” she had posted on X on Tuesday.

She told The Indian Express, “Initially, the Jan Sunwai was to be held in Lalbazar. We had issued letters for permission to all departments… After waiting we decided to make the necessary arrangements on our own and thus selected the National Library.”

Officials of West Bengal police and the Kolkata police commissionerate declined to comment.

Former Chairman of NCW Rekha Sharma also told The Indian Express, “They (the police) in West Bengal never cooperated in our time as well. I could never hold a Jan Sunwai in West Bengal in my time. You can’t do any welfare even if you want to as the Chief Minister of West Bengal is against the welfare of women.”
