Murder convict escapes from Pune’s Yerawada open jail, second incident this year

A convict in a murder case escaped from the open jail in Yerawada Central Prison in Pune on Wednesday, the police said.

The police said Anil Meghdas Patoniya, 35, a native of Titwala in Thane district, was reported missing during the attendance conducted by the prison staff on Wednesday afternoon.

Patoniya was serving life sentence at Yerwada Central Prison in the murder case and due to good behaviour, he was shifted to the open jail, said an officer.

The police have filed a separate first information report (FIR) against him at the Yerawada police station for jailbreak.

The police have launched a search for the accused.

In another incident of jailbreak this year, a murder case convict, identified as Raju Dusane, 43, had escaped from the open jail in Yerawada in August. He was nabbed in three days, the police added.
