Four school students were killed after they were trapped under a truck following a road accident in Palakkad Thursday.
The incident was reported in Kalladikode on the national highway stretch between Palakkad and Kozhikode. The victims were identified as Irshana, Mitha, Ridha and Aysha, all of them Class 8 students of Government Higher Secondary School, Karimba.
According to police, the students were returning home after the day’s examination, when a cement truck fatally knocked them down. Three of the students died at the spot, while another died at a nearby hospital.
Malappuram SP R Vishwanath, who is holding the charge of Palakkad district, said the truck driver lost control while giving way to another truck, and fell on the students who were on the side of the road.
Police detained the driver and cleaner of the truck, which turned turtle, after the accident.
Describing the incident as shocking, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said it will be probed and “necessary steps” will be taken.
