Kurla victim’s jewellery stolen from accident site, case lodged

Police on Thursday registered a case of theft after gold jewellery belonging to one of the victims in Kurla accident was allegedly stolen from the accident site and while she being taken to hospitals.

The FIR was registered based on a complaint filed by Abbas, son of Fatima Ansari who was killed in the Kurla accident.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Gawade (Zone V) said: “We have registered a case and are trying to locate the suspect who stole the gold ornaments.”

Seven people were killed and 42 others were injured when a BEST bus driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and ended up crashing into 22 vehicles on Monday night.

According to police officials, 55-year-old Fatima Ansari was a resident of Balaji Temple Road in Kurla West. She worked as an ayah (nanny) at Desai Hospital in Kurla (West).

“My mother was on night duty and usually left home by 7 pm. However, on Monday, she left late and was hit by a speeding bus while walking toward the railway station,” her younger son Abid said.

The police said a video has surfaced on social media in which an unidentified person is seen removing the bangles of Ansari who was lying on the road.

“When others intervened, the person claimed he was removing them to ensure the bangles wouldn’t get misplaced or stolen by someone else,” said Abbas, referring to the video.

Locals found her mobile phone at the scene and contacted her family by calling the last dialled number, which turned out to be that of her younger son.

“When we reached the spot, an unknown person handed over her purse and mobile phone, but her bangles were missing,” said Abid.

The family members further added that her nose ring and earrings also went missing after she was rushed to the hospital.

“At the scene, both her earrings and nose ring were intact. However, after she was taken to Bhabha Hospital, her earring was stolen, and later, when she was shifted to Rajawadi for the postmortem, her nose ring also went missing,” her son added.

The family alleged they waited for three days for the unknown person to return the gold ornaments. When no one stepped forward, Abbas lodged a complaint with the police.
