IPS officer made to retire last year reinstated after Supreme Court verdict

Gurjinder Pal Singh, an IPS officer who was retired last year by the Ministry of Home Affairs, was reinstated in service on Tuesday by the ministry’s order following a recent Supreme Court verdict.

Last month, the Chhattisgarh High Court quashed three FIRs against Singh of alleged corruption, sedition and extortion that were registered against him during the Congress government regime. He was also suspended in July 2021. In January 2022, he was arrested in the corruption case and months later was granted bail by high court.

Singh, a 1994-batch officer, was earlier the Additional Director General (ADG) of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and also served as Inspector General (IG), Raipur.

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) Tuesday ordered Singh’s reinstatement within four weeks, noting that FIRs were registered against him at the “behest of higher authorities of the (then Chhattisgarh) state government” as he did not toe its line.

The government appealed against the CAT’s order in the high court, which upheld the order in August this year. The government then moved the apex court against the HC order but its petition was dismissed on December 10.
