Colaba police on Friday registered a case against an unknown person for allegedly following and molesting a 58-year-old woman in South Mumbai. The police, who are trying to locate the accused, suspect he has previously targeted several other women including foreign tourists.
As per police officials, the recent incident occurred at noon on December 11, when the accused allegedly followed the 58-year-old, who was visiting her friend in Colaba.
“The unknown person initially tried to talk to her on the road but when she did not respond, he followed her into the premises of her residential building. In the CCTV footage, we can see the accused approaching the woman, who ran into her building out of fear and rushed into her house.”
Police said the accused had also knocked on the door of her home and when she raised an alarm for help, he locked the door from outside and fled. Officials further said the incident came to light after locals began spreading an alert about the pervert.
“The victim was unwilling to lodge a complaint. However, we convinced her acquaintance to register a case after which an offence was filed,” a senior police officer said.
Officials said teams were formed to find the accused as it is suspected he has committed similar offences in the past. On Friday, police managed to trace the accused and detain him.
“We have learnt that he has targeted other women too. We are trying to fetch details about those victims to record their statements which will help us in seeking conviction,” an officer said.
