Law students from Mumbai University’s Thane sub-centre, all girls, have complained that they have received anonymous letters with obscene content in their classrooms and bags. While students have informed varsity authorities, they have also submitted a written complaint to the local police station.
Complainant students said they have been repeatedly receiving such letters in the past 10-15 days. Initially, the incident went unreported after a warning was issued by the class representative. But the complaint was soon lodged to varsity authorities when the letters appeared again.
The issue gained attention when affected students approached Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which then reported the matter to Mumbai University’s Vice Chancellor Dr Ravindra Kulkarni. In a statement, ABVP Mumbai head Sankalpa Faldesai said, “The complaint by students is dated December 5. This shows that the issue has persisted for 10-15 days. Yet no concrete action has been taken by Mumbai University in this regard. It raises serious concerns over the varsity’s approach to students’ safety.”
The statement further alleges, “Students along with their parents had to approach the police with their complaints, as the Thane campus director was unwilling to accept the written complaint by affected students. Varsity authorities should have instead taken affected students into confidence and helped them, considering the atmosphere of fear it has created on the campus, and among girls, with the parents of a few even considering cancelling admission.”
Confirming that ABVP sent a complaint letter on behalf of affected students, an official from MU said, “An inquiry committee has already been formed to probe into this complaint.”
