Haryana BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ram Chander Jangra has sparked controversy with his remarks about the alleged disappearance of 700 girls during the 2021 farmer agitation near Delhi borders. A day after making the claim, Jangra clarified on Friday that “there is no such complaint, and these are people’s gossips.”
Addressing an event to inaugurate a sugar mill in Rohtak’s Meham on Thursday, the 74-year-old MP alleged that drug addicts from Punjab had spread a network of drugs in Haryana during the farmer protests, claiming, “As many as 700 girls from the Singhu border and villages near Bahadurgarh (Jhajjar) are missing.”
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Jangra said, “Those drug addicts of Punjab who stayed at Tikri and Singhu borders during the 2021 agitation spread a drug network in Haryana. Some were injecting drugs, while others consumed bhuki (codeine), opium, cocaine, or smack. As many as 700 girls from Singhu border and nearby villages are missing. Whether they are farmers or kasai (butchers), some people want to disturb Haryana’s peace and brotherhood.”
Haryana BJP spokesperson Sanjay Sharma termed Jangra’s comment as his “personal statement,” insisting that the party has no connection to it. Sharma said, “Only he (Jangra) can explain the context in which he made the statement. The party believes that the farmer agitation was driven by some genuine demands, but all issues should be resolved through dialogue. However, many people have also taken undue advantage of this agitation.”
‘Drugs spread in Haryana during agitation’
During the event, Jangra claimed that before 2021, Haryana’s main intoxicants were liquor, biri, and cigarettes, but drugs like chitta, opium, and cocaine proliferated after the farmer protests. He suggested that Punjab-based drug addicts had created a market in Haryana.
“You may check the CID report. Where did these drugs come from? Our daughters are missing, and our youngsters have turned into drug addicts. Nobody knows where these missing girls have gone,” he alleged.
Criticism of farmer leaders
Jangra also criticised farmer leaders like Rakesh Tikait and Gurnam Singh Chaduni, calling them “misleaders” and questioning their electoral performance. He blamed the protests for the closure of nearly 200 factories at Kundli and Bahadurgarh borders, saying it hurt Haryana’s economy and disrupted social harmony.
“Our brotherhood was spoiled, and our daughters went missing. Be alert from these people,” he said, urging the public to trust the Modi government at the Centre and the Haryana state government.
‘People’s gossip’
When questioned by The Indian Express on Friday about whether Haryana Police had investigated the alleged disappearance of 700 girls, Jangra said, “There is no such complaint from anyone. We heard it from people; these are gossips. I did not say any farmer misbehaved with a girl. I was only talking about the aftereffects of the agitation.”
Explaining his remarks, Jangra said, “During visits to villages, people told us that hundreds of factories near Bahadurgarh and Singhu borders were closed for a year, giving human traffickers an opportunity to lure people with false promises of employment. The administration was preoccupied with handling the agitation, allowing such elements to take advantage. We heard that many girls were taken away for work and went missing during this period.”
Jangra further claimed that the full context of his comments was not reflected in the viral video.
‘Drugs were already a problem in Punjab’
The BJP MP said that while Punjab already faced a severe drug problem, Haryana’s primary intoxicants were liquor, biri, and cigarettes. However, the agitation allegedly gave drug peddlers and suppliers a chance to expand into Haryana.
“Some people took undue advantage of the agitation. Drug suppliers created a market in Haryana, which was not the case before 2021,” he said.
