Disappointed by the CBI’s failure to submit a chargesheet against former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and police officer Abhijit Mondal, the parents of the woman junior doctor on Friday said the “system” was failing them.
The junior doctors, who led several weeks of a protest movement, seeking justice for their colleague and a secure environment at medical colleges in the state, also expressed their disappointment and vowed to intensify their stir.
After the court granted bail to the two accused, the mother of the girl said: “We thought the CBI would speed up the investigation and bring those responsible to justice. But now, with the accused being granted bail, it feels like the system is failing us.”
“Every day, we wonder if this will be another case in which the powerful escape without punishment,” she said. “We are heartbroken. We trusted the CBI to deliver justice, but now we are left wondering if we will ever see justice for our daughter,” said the woman’s father.
Junior doctors, who suspended their protests following assurances of stern action and justice, demanded accountability from the CBI, saying: The CBI should take responsibility for failure. It has hurt the feelings of common people,” said junior doctor Aniket Mahato at a press conference at RG Kar hospital.
“After so much agitation, this order is really disappointing. Not only for the doctors, but all the people of Bengal who took to the streets to protest against the RG Kar incident,” said junior doctor Asfaqullah Naiya.
Dr Neel Ratan Naiya of the Medical Service Centre called for a larger movement and alleged that the CBI was hand in glove with the state government. “People are angry, sad, disappointed. We believe that the CBI in a conspiracy with the state administration didn’t file a chargesheet so that the real killers of the RG Kar victim remain scot-free. Medical Service Unity will take out a march from Karunamoyee to the CBI office in Salt Lake… If such conspiracies are not stopped now, there will be many more victims seeking justice. If we have to snatch justice, we need to stay united.”
Meanwhile, the junior doctors association has called a General Body meeting to discuss their next course of action. “Abhaya Mancha will hold a protest at Dharmatala tomorrow (Saturday). We will burn effigies of the Health Minister, Chief Minister, Prime Minister, and the Director of CBI to symbolise our outrage and demand accountability,”a statement issued by junior doctors stated. The group also released a list of “immediate demands”.
“The CBI must immediately submit a supplementary chargesheet to ensure that justice is served without further delay,” it added. — With PTI
