Weeks after a minor girl was raped and killed in Farakka, a court in Jangipur in Murshidabad district of West Bengal on Friday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Dinbandhu Halder, to death, and his accomplice, 23-year-old Shubojit Haldar, to life imprisonment.
The incident took place in October this year during the Durga Puja festival. The girl, who was visiting her uncle’s house in Farakka, was allegedly lured away by the accused.
Additional Director General (ADG), West Bengal Police, Supratim Sarkar also said that police in their investigation found that after the girl was raped and killed, the main accused raped her body again.
Sarkar said that a special investigation team was formed to probe the case and following the arrest of the two persons, the chargesheet was submitted within 21 days.
Hailing the sentence, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that every rapist deserves capital punishment. “I have said this before, and I will say it again: Every rapist deserves nothing less than the harshest punishment — capital punishment. As a society, we must unite to eradicate this heinous social malice. I believe that swift, time-bound trials and punishments will serve as a powerful deterrent, sending a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated,” she posted on X.
She also commended the state police and judiciary. “Barely a week ago, West Bengal Police and our justice system secured capital punishment within just 62 days for the perpetrator of a brutal rape-murder of a minor in Joynagar. Today, death penalty has been awarded to one of two accused in the heinous rape-murder of yet another minor in Farakka on 13.10.24, with his co-accused getting a life term.”
ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar lauded the efforts of the police in swiftly investigating the case. He said the accused had attempted to cover up the crime, but the vigilance of local residents and the diligent investigation by the police led to their conviction.
