Three months ago, Harshita Beg, a 21-year-old BBA graduate, preparing for government exams, had shifted to Ansal Golf Link 1 residential society at Greater Noida’s Omega 1, where her two friends, Chirag Chaudhary and Yatin Sharma, already resided. Early Thursday, during her birthday celebrations, she saw Chirag murder Yatin while they argued about her.
Later in the day, Chirag (25) was arrested for the murder of Yatin (24). They were not only flatmates but also business partners, running a cafe at Beta 1 Plaza. Along with Chirag, Harshita and one Abhinav Verma, who was also present at the party, were arrested.
The police said that around 12 am on Thursday, Harshita started her birthday celebrations at flat number CF 215 with three friends – Yatin, Chirag and Abhinav.
“Yatin and Chirag were childhood friends and Harshita’s flatmates. They had got separate cakes for her… Harshita cut Yatin’s cake first, whom she tied rakhi to every year, which irked Chirag,” a police officer who is part of the investigation said, adding that Chirag was envious of Harshita’s friends and relationships.
The cake cutting set the tone for the rest of the night, said police. “Chirag was drinking heavily throughout the night. Around 4 am, he saw Harshita texting some boy,” the officer said.
“Enraged, Chirag confronted Harshita and started shouting… He said that either he would slit his veins or kill Harshita. Yatin tried to calm him down, which led to an argument between the two.”
Yatin’s attempts to reason with Chirag were futile, police said. “Chirag went on to grab a knife from the kitchen and marched towards Harshita… Yatin tried to stop him again. During a scuffle that ensued, Chirag stabbed Yatin on the right side of his chest,” said the officer.
Panicked, Chirag, Harshita and Abhinav rushed Yatin to the nearby Yatharth Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The hospital informed the police, following which the three were arrested. A case under Section 103 (murder) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered at Beta 2 police station.
“Yatin’s family members arrived in the morning and the body was handed over to them,” an officer said.
Yatin and Chirag had rented the flat about an year ago, said police. Friends since childhood, they came to Noida from Aligarh and started a business together.
