Twelve years after the Aam Aadmi Party found its roots in the sporadic and angst-driven protests triggered nationwide by the December 16 gangrape, sources in Delhi’s ruling party said it would commemorate the incident at a special tribute on Monday.
AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister Atishi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav are likely to be in attendance at Thyagaraj Stadium to exhibit a joint INDIA front on the issue of women’s safety in the country, sources said.
Aimed at paying tribute to the 23-year-old victim, the event comes in the wake of the AAP government’s recently announced Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana and its political assault on the BJP in the run-up to the Delhi Assembly elections.
Dubbed Mahila Adalat, the event will be conducted in a manner similar to court proceedings, featuring a discussion on crimes against women in Delhi.
Almost daily over the last fortnight, the AAP has attacked the BJP-led Centre in general and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in particular with regard to the capital’s law and order situation.
On December 16, 2012, a medical student from Uttar Pradesh was sexually assaulted and her male companion thrashed by people including a minor aboard a moving bus in south Delhi.
While the victim later succumbed to the injuries inflicted on her during the brutal assault, one of the five accused convicted in the case allegedly died by suicide in Delhi’s Tihar prison, a minor accused served a sentence at a government facility and the remaining four were hanged.
The AAP, which was newly formed at the time of the incident, was at the forefront of the agitations it triggered in Delhi.
