Tripura observes Vijay Diwas; Governor, CM pay homage to fallen Indian soldiers of 1971 War

The Tripura government observed Vijay Diwas Monday to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 War. The sacrifices made by the armed forces during Operation Cactus Lily were also remembered on the occasion.

Operation Cactus Lily was a crucial military operation of the Indian Air Force in December 1971 that significantly assisted the movement of the Indian Army into the erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to engage in warfare with Pakistan forces.

Speaking to reporters after paying respects to the fallen heroes of the 1971 War at Albert Ekka Park on the outskirts of Agartala city on Monday, Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu said, “The 1971 war is a historic war in the entire world. Ninety thousand soldiers of Pakistan surrendered in that war. Such a massive surrender didn’t happen in any other country in the world…”

Recounting the bravery of Indian soldiers in the war, the Governor said, “Our brave soldiers stood in support of the supporters of Mujibur Rahman in Bangladesh and victory was achieved after a battle of 13 days. Today is the day when 90,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered back in 1971 and I have come here to pay my respects to the fallen gallant soldiers of that war. I also pray to the Almighty to grant their families strength.”

Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha took to social media to pay respect to the heroes of the 1971 War. “Today, on #VijayDiwas, we salute the bravery & sacrifices of our soldiers who fought for India’s historic victory in 1971. Their selfless dedication & unwavering resolve will forever inspire generations to come,” he posted.

The Vijay Diwas celebrations were held this year amid anti-India tirades from a section of Bangladeshi leaders in recent weeks.
