Calcutta HC refuses anticipatory bail to businessman Sujay Krishna Bhadra over missed court dates

Trouble mounted for Kolkata-based businessman Sujay Krishna Bhadra Monday after the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court rejected his anticipatory application in connection with the Central Bureau of Investigation’s probe into alleged irregularities in a teachers’ recruitment scam.

Bhadra, known popularly as ‘Kalighater Kaku’ or ‘the uncle from Kailghat’, was denied anticipatory bail after the court observed that he had missed some court appearances. Significantly, Bhadra had failed to appear in court on two occasions in November citing health issues, with jail authorities submitting his medical reports.

The development, which comes within a month of the high court granting him bail in connection with the Enforcement Directorate’s investigation of the case, means that the CBI can now take him into custody.

Bhadra was arrested last year for “non-cooperation with the investigation” into the alleged transfer of proceeds of crime from his firm to M/S Leaps & Bounds Pvt Ltd, a company linked with Trinamool Congress MP and general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

While granting him bail under “strict conditions” earlier this month, Justice Suvra Ghosh said that the “essentially hinges on the statement of the petitioner and the co-accused” and recovery made “pursuant” to it. However, the HC had asked him to deposit his passport and provide authorities with his phone number.

Soon after this, the CBI sought his custody.
