Five people were arrested on Sunday for their alleged involvement in the abduction and gangrape of a minor girl in South Tripura district on December 13, police said, adding that they were produced before a court on Monday.
As per the complaint by the girl’s mother, she was abducted from near her home by two people to a rubber plantation, where three others joined the duo and gang-raped her. They later dropped the girl off at home late at night.
“We arrested five accused on Sunday. They have been charged with abduction, gangrape and under section 6 of the Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act,” said a police officer.
Police sources said that when the accused were initially presented before a local court on Sunday, the defence lawyer for two of them claimed they were minors and provided the necessary documents. However, the police requested two days to verify the documents and the court ordered that they be presented again on Monday.
A few days ago, a minor girl was abducted and gang-raped in Unakoti district. Two people were arrested in the case.
In two separate incidents in September, two minor girls were raped in Khowai district and the police arrested two people in the cases. In August, two people were held for allegedly raping a minor girl in South Tripura district.
