Nearly five months after the death of Shakuntala in Nayagaon, Mohali police have registered a case of murder against her elder son, Nitin Sarna. The FIR was lodged based on a complaint filed by her younger son, Naman Sarna, who resides in Australia.
In his complaint, Naman alleged that his mother, who had no prior health conditions, died under suspicious circumstances on July 21. He stated that his elder brother, Nitin, informed him about her death at 8 am that day. Naman claimed he requested Nitin to delay the cremation so he could attend the last rites. Initially, Nitin agreed but later proceeded with the cremation without his consent.
According to the complaint, Naman contacted friends Amar Sidhu and Puneet Kumar, along with his in-laws, to reach the cremation ground in Sector 25, Chandigarh. “My friends intervened and stopped the cremation, as I informed Nitin via a video call that the funeral should not proceed until I arrived in India. The body was subsequently kept in the mortuary at Dera Bassi Civil Hospital,” Naman alleged.
However, Naman claimed that on July 23, Nitin removed the body from the mortuary early in the morning and cremated it without informing him.
Naman further alleged that his mother had executed a will in his favour two years ago, and Nitin became aware of it only in January 2024. “The relationship between my mother and Nitin, as well as his wife Rosy, had been strained since 2013. My mother had even mentioned this in her will. Over the years, their relationship worsened, and Nitin continuously harassed her for financial reasons,” Naman stated.
He accused Nitin, Rosy, and several of Rosy’s family members, including her parents and maternal relatives, of being involved in his mother’s murder.
Following Naman’s complaint, the police conducted a preliminary inquiry and registered a case under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) against Nitin Sarna at Nayagaon police station. Investigations are ongoing.
