On Saturday morning, a little after 8.30am, a security guard with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) was sent out to check a pipeline in Yamuna Khadar area in Shastri Park. As he reached the spot, he was shocked at what he saw: The body of a woman was hanging from the pipeline with a rope. Soon, police arrived at the spot and, through an incoming phone call on the mobile phone of the woman, were able to establish her identity and her whereabouts.
But when they reached her rented accommodation in Kartar Nagar, they were in for another shock. The body of the woman’s husband was found hanging inside a room.
Police are suspecting the deaths to be a case of double suicide.
The couple has been identified as Jumi Das (25) and Bhaskar Deka (27) from Assam. They both worked at Omaxe Mall in Chandni Chowk – while Das worked in housekeeping, Deka was a security guard.
“Mobile of the deceased was found on her person. Her friend told us that Das had called her the previous night to tell her that she was going to commit suicide and that the body of her husband was hanging in her home,” said North East DCP Joy Tirkey.
Police said the friend did not inform police about the phone call that night.
Police said both bodies have been sent to the GTB mortuary for post-mortem examination. Deka also left a suicide note written in Assamese expressing his love for his wife and his regret at bringing her to Delhi from Assam, police added.
