One more body was recovered on Sunday from the debris of a multi-storey building that collapsed in the Sohana area of Punjab’s Mohali on Saturday bringing the toll to two. The administration fears that more people may still be trapped under the rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing.
The body of Abhishek Kumar, 28, an IT professional, was identified by his father Inderpal, a resident of Ambala, who had been camping at the rescue site ever since he found out about the building collapse late last night.
Inderpal told The Indian Express that his daughter-in-law was working with an IT company in Mohali and his son used to frequent the gym. His friends said when the building began to develop cracks at an alarming pace, everyone ran out of the gym. Abhishek got trapped when he rushed back to get his mobile phone.
Mohali’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Viraj S Tidke told The Indian Express that rescue operation will continue till they recover all those who are trapped.
The body of a 20-year-old woman, Drishti, was found on Saturday night. She had been staying in a paying guest accommodation located on the top floor of the building.
Relatives of missing persons have been arriving at the site, hoping to find their loved ones. The three-storey building collapsed on Saturday due to the excavation of a basement on an adjacent plot in Sohana.
