In a major relief for lakhs of government job aspirants, the state government Friday decided to relax the maximum age criterion across categories by one year for candidates appearing for recruitment examinations conducted by the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC). The government, though, added this was only a one-time measure considering the delays in recruitment processes owing to confusion over the Maratha reservation.
The MPSC published advertisements for various government posts earlier this year. However, it was later instructed by the state to issue revised advertisements considering the new roster as per the revised reservation criterion. This process of revision led to considerable delay in the 2024 recruitment process. The delay resulted in the disqualification of many candidates on account of crossing the maximum age limit.
Thereafter, several aspirants had written to the state government demanding relaxation in the age criterion.
In response to such demands, the state government issued a Government Resolution (GR) declaring the one-year relaxation for recruitments conducted by MPSC.
The GR states, “This relaxation is applicable for recruitment exams which were newly advertised post January 1, 2024, and there is no progress in the process until now. For all such exams, the maximum age limit is relaxed by one year as opposed to the originally decided maximum age limit for respective exams.” This relaxation will not be applicable for recruitment exams announced and advertised after December 20, 2024.
Reacting to the development, Mahesh Gharbude from the Pune-based Spardha Pariksha Vidyarthi Association said, “It is definitely good news for several candidates who were likely to be disqualified for no fault of their own. But this relaxation allows only one year’s extension in the maximum age limit for B and C group recruitment exams, whereas, for gazetted posts, states in the past had declared a two-year extension in the maximum age limit. Both relaxations should be at par as most candidates appear for both exams.”
