Head of Climate Research & Services division, IMD, Pune K S Hosalikar Saturday stressed on the importance of sharing knowledge.
“We do not fear sharing our knowledge. Fear comes when we have limited knowledge,” said Hosalikar during the joint techno-scientific brainstorming session organised by the Indian Meteorological Society Pune Chapter (IMSP).
The event focused on the role of technological advancements in addressing environmental and agricultural challenges.
The session began with a welcome address by Dr. Milind Mujumdar, Chairman of IMSP, followed by remarks from Dr. Mahanand Mane, Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture, and Sajeevan G, Chairman of ISRS.
The chief guest, Dr R. Krishnan, Director of IITM Pune, delivered the inaugural address, emphasising the critical role of data and technology in tackling climate issues.
Hosalikar explained how IMD has been delivering weather information to the public for the past 150 years.
He provided details about various mobile apps designed for farmers. He emphasised the importance of collaboration among government institutions, NGOs, and academic organizations.
Dr. Krishnan shared insights on global warming and its consequences. He highlighted the vast amount of data currently available and stressed the need for its proper utilisation to derive meaningful information and foster new research.
Sajeevan highlighted the applications of remote sensing technology in agriculture, including crop growth monitoring, disease tracking, and harvest planning, supported by AI advancements.
The event also celebrated the retirement of K.S. Hosalikar, recognizing his significant contributions to meteorological research and public outreach. Shirish Rawal from the Earth Sight Foundation emphasised making weather information accessible to grassroots communities.
Various research activities related to weather, climate, agriculture and allied sciences were also showcased during the event. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr TP Sabin, Secretary of IMSP.
