Gujarat confidential: The Cost Concern

The flyover over the Abacus Circle in Sama in Vadodara has run into a controversy as members of the civic body’s Standing Committee have disagreed about the additional proposal of linking an upcoming flyover with the existing flyover at Urmi school to ensure a “smooth design” for future requirements. Earlier this week, members of the Standing Committee visited the spot without Standing Committee Chairman Dr Sheetal Mistry, and expressed their concern at the escalation in cost.

While the Abacus Circle flyover is estimated to be built at a cost of Rs 54 crore, linking it to the Urmi flyover will cost Rs 120 crore. Two Standing Committee members — Hemisha Thakkar and Jagruti Kaka — have opposed the proposal while other members are also inclined to back the two women members, sources said. As a result of the disagreement, the Standing Committee members who met on Friday decided to defer the decision even though the approach road to the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway has already been closed for two years to allow the work to commence.
