Mumbai News Live Updates: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit Maharashtra’s Parbhani city, over 10 days after violence broke out in the region leading to the death of two persons. He will meet the families of Ambedkarites Somnath Suryavanshi, who allegedly died in police custody, and Vijay Wakode, who died while participating in the protest, PTI reported. The visit has been dubbed as ‘drama’ by the state wing of BJP, saying, “Instead of doing such drama, the focus should be on how the society can be benefited through constructive means.”

What led to violence in Parbhani?: Violent protests broke out in Parbhani after a glass-enclosed replica of the Constitution near Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue outside the railway station in the city was vandalised on December 10. This led to clamping of prohibitory orders by the administration in the district nearly 500 km from Mumbai. However, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently stated in the Assembly that Suryavanshi had told a magistrate that he was not tortured. Additionally, CCTV footage does not provide any evidence of brutality.

Today’s weather update: Pollution levels remain high in Mumbai showing slight improvement with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 115 on Monday, categorised as ‘moderate.’ Over the past few weeks, the city has consistently experienced ‘moderate’ air quality. However, conditions deteriorated sharply earlier this week when the AQI climbed to 225, edging dangerously close to the ‘poor’ category. The Bombay High Court on Friday said that a pollution-free environment is a constitutional right and pulled up the Maharashtra government for failure to tackle the issue of air pollution.
