A drizzle greeted Delhi residents on Monday morning with Palam station reporting a rainfall of 0.4 mm, as per data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Other stations, including Safdarjung, Lodhi Road, Ridge, and Aya Nagar recorded trace amounts of rainfall as of 8.30 am.
The IMD has forecast light rainfall in parts of Delhi-NCR for the next two hours, as of 9.50 am. The Met department said light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur in the NCR, including Noida, Greater Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad. It has forecast light rainfall in Delhi’s Jafarpur, Najafgarh, Chhattarpur, and Ayanagar areas.
The average air quality in the National Capital was in the ‘very poor’ category at 9 am as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The level of particulate matter in the air has seen a slight decline in the past few hours, as per the CPCB data.
The average PM10 level was 338.9µg/m3 at 4 am, which fell to 322.7µg/m3 by 9 am and PM 2.5 levels also saw a gradual decline in the morning from 220.3µg/m3 at 4 am, to 207.6µg/m3 by 9 am on Monday.
The winter season sees the driest months in a year and rainfall during this time is crucial in clearing up the pollutants that get trapped close to the surface due to calm winds and low temperatures.
The minimum temperature on Monday was 8.6 degree Celsius, a notch above normal. The maximum is forecast to be 20 degree Celsius.
