After chilly spell, light rain on anvil for Pune; check what IMD has to say

After experiencing single-digit temperatures, Pune is expected to have several days of cloudy skies, with the possibility of light rain, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

The IMD indicated that starting Thursday, December 26, the city may witness light rain due to moisture-laden winds coming from the northern part of the country.

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting IMD, said with southerly winds, moisture incursion would happen from the Bay of Bengal. “Due to cold surroundings during the night, isolated fogs would be reported in parts of Maharashtra, including Pune,” he said.

Kashyapi said Pune will experience cloudy skies starting on Christmas (December 25). “Naturally, with cloudy weather, day temperature is likely to reduce, and as a result, wind chill is likely to be felt throughout the day,” he said.

In the first week of December, Pune and its surrounding regions experienced a sharp decrease in minimum temperatures. Some areas, such as the National Defense Academy, reported around 6 degrees Celsius lows.

Pune was among the locations affected by cold wave conditions, which led to a significant drop in temperature.

This cold spell was primarily caused by the influx of cold winds from the north, combined with low humidity levels attributed to the formation of low-pressure areas in the Bay of Bengal.

Forecasts indicate that double-digit temperatures are expected for the next few days in Pune and the surrounding regions.
