Bengal school jobs case: ED ‘fails’ to give all documents, framing of charges delayed

A special court here in Kolkata on Monday could not proceed ahead with the framing of charges against former education minister Partha Chatterjee, his close aide Arpita Mukherjee and 52 others booked in the school jobs case.

A majority of the accused, present in the court, said that the framing of charges could not go ahead as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) could not provide all the documents which it had relied upon.

The counsel of Arpita Mukherjee, who is out on bail, told the court that the ED had not submitted all the documents that’s part of the 60,000 pages of the chargesheet.

The counsel of Partha Chatterjee and Tapash Mondal alleged that there were several documents in the chargesheet that were illegible and further asked the court to ask the ED to be more cooperative.

Meanwhile, Manik Bhattacharya of the TMC said the ED had not followed the orders of the Court and had not filed a closure report. Further, he submitted that the ED should file a compliance report.

As the process of framing the charges could not be started, the judge asked for those in custody to appear virtually while those on bail to appear physically on Tuesday as the court has to file a report to the Supreme Court regarding the process of framing of charges.

On December 13, the Supreme Court granted relief to Partha Chatterjee and ordered his release on bail from February 1.
