California Gov Newsom criticises President-elect Trump over disinformation about Los Angeles wildfire

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticised the US President-elect Donald Trump over the raging wildfire in Los Angeles, calling the “misinformation or disinformation doesn’t aid anyone” after Trump took jibe at Newsom, President Joe Biden and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

At least 16 people have died and another 16 are reported to be missing in the wildfires spread across the greater Los Angeles area, reported The Associated Press.

Newsom appeared to have been targeting Trump’s recent social media posts wherein the president-elect, in one of his posts, claimed that Newsom had blocked a measure which could have resolved the issue of water scarcity in stopping wildfire by allowing water to flow from Northern California to Southern California.

Using an insulting name for California governor, Trump wrote, “Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way.”

Newsom said that if he starts responding to Trump’s insults, “we would spend another month”. Speaking to NBC News in an interview, Newsom said “I’m very familiar with them. Every elected official that he disagrees with is very familiar with them.”

Pointing to the inaccuracies in Trump’s claims, Newsom said that the president-elect was trying to connect delta smelt to the Los Angeles wildfire which is “inexcusable because it’s incorrect”.

Newsom then invited Donald Trump to California and asked him to meet the Americans who have been affected by the raging wildfires.

In a letter addressed to Trump, Newsom wrote “See the devastation firsthand, and join me and others in thanking the heroic firefighters and first responders who are putting their lives on the line.”

According to the California fire department, the fire in Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth and Hurst fires had consumed more than 62 square miles (160 square kilometers), while over 150,000 people have been evacuated.
