Dalip Tahil reveals he was in his early 30s when he played Aamir Khan’s father in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak: ‘Many actors didn’t take the role’

Actor Dalip Tahil has revealed that he was in his early 30s when he signed on to play superstar Aamir Khan’s father in the 1988 musical romantic drama Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. The age gap between him and Aamir, Dalip said, is only ten years. In the latest episode of Cyrus Says, when he was asked about playing Aamir’s father’s despite not much of an age gap between them, Dalip said that was never his concern– but that was definitely something which deterred other actors to take up the part.

“It was my first father role, and the film was a game changer for me. I am ten years older than Aamir. In fact, that was the reason why quite a few actors didn’t take the role as they didn’t want to do a father role. That’s what Nasir Hussain sir (producer) had told me. I was in my early 30s at the time and didn’t think about it twice, the role was fantastic and so I did it.”

When asked if he felt worried that he would be stereotyped after the film as an on-screen father, Dalip said that wasn’t the case at the time, but he later did feel the rampant typecast that was coming into play.

“There was no question of fearing typecast because it was my first time. After that I got a lot of father roles and then I was worried about being typecast, because that is a problem with all actors. If something succeeds, everyone wants you to play the same thing all over again. But fortunately for me I managed to do other stuff,” he added.

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak marked the big screen debut of Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, who played lovers. The film was a smash hit and established Aamir and Juhi as stars.

Dalip Tahil will be next seen in The Family Man Season 3, headlined by Manoj Bajpayee and directed Raj and DK.
