INDIA EXPRESSED its deep concern on the rapidly deteriorating situation in Sri Lanka. In a statement, PM Rajiv Gandhi said there was a sharp escalation of violence in the northern and eastern provinces where a heavy loss of innocent lives had taken place. Many Tamils of Indian origin who had settled in these areas were among the victims.

Bhopal gas plant test

TECHNICIANS AND SCIENTISTS are working round the clock to evolve a “zero-risk method” to neutralise the remaining methyl-isocyanate gas in the local pesticide plant of the Union Carbide. Working under the supervision of a team of experts, led by the CSIR director-general S Varadarajan, the Union Carbide technicians re-started the plant to test whether it was possible to safely convert the 15 tonnes MIC into “Sevin”. The test run was successful.

SC notice to MP

THE SUPREME COURT issued show-cause notice to the Union government, the Madhya Pradesh government and the Union Carbide on a petition seeking compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the victims of the gas disaster. According to the writ petition filed by a lawyer, the fundamental rights of the victims of the gas leak had been violated by the negligence of the state government and the Centre.
