Days after the Delhi L-G Secretariat ordered a crackdown on illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, two nationals from the country have been arrested from the Hazrat Nizamuddin area for staying in India without valid documents, police said Friday.
According to Ravi Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast Delhi), two Bangladesh nationals identified as Abdul Ahad (22) and Mohammad Azizul (32) were arrested on December 10 and 12, respectively.
He explained that 916 individuals have been verified in Southeast Delhi so far, of which eight illegal immigrants, including six Bangladeshis, have been detained by the district police.
“The two men were found to have overstayed in India illegally and were produced before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for deportation proceedings,” said the officer, adding that several teams have been formed to carry out the verifications.
During questioning, the DCP added, Ahad, who works as a labourer and hails from Bangladesh’s Sylhet, admitted to entering India on December 6 with help from a Bangladesh agent to find work. “Dhaka resident Azizul revealed that he had entered India in 2004 through the Petrapole-Benapole border in West Bengal and had been residing here ever since,” he stated.
DCP Singh added that the police teams have noticed that the landlords were not aware about the mandatory provisions of the Foreigners Act, 1946. The Foreigners Act mandates hotels and landlords to submit information about foreign tenants to FRRO within 24 hours of their
arrival.
