As the winter chill takes over, flu cases become common in many households. While flu shots are a must, sticking to a wholesome diet to improve immunity is also necessary. We bring you expert opinions to tackle the sniffles and coughs this season.
The fluctuation in humidity and temperature increases the risk of exposure to several allergens. “This makes it easier for the viruses and the illnesses to spread faster than usual. During these times, children and adults may often struggle with seasonal illnesses like coughing, fever, flu, and infection. This can cause discomfort while making them frustrated, cranky, and moody,” said Dt Inshara Mahedvi, consultant dietician, Motherhood Hospital, Lullanagar, Pune.
Dr Vikas Mittal, director, pulmonologist, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, said that flu is caused by the influenza virus, which affects people of all age groups, including young children, adults, and the elderly. “It primarily leads to respiratory infections, particularly in children and young individuals. While flu symptoms often resemble the common cold, the illness can become severe in individuals with low immunity or those who neglect basic health habits, such as skipping meals. In extreme age groups—children under 5 years and adults over 60 years—the flu can lead to complications like pneumonia, which may be life-threatening,” said Dr Mittal.
To stay protected from the flu, it’s essential to follow precautions, including:
* Maintaining physical distance: Keep at least 6 feet away from others in crowded places.
* Practicing good hand hygiene: Wash your hands regularly, especially before touching the face, nose, or mouth.
* Cover mouth and nose: Use a tissue or an elbow when coughing or sneezing.
* Wearing a mask: If a person has a cold or flu symptoms, wearing a mask can prevent the spread of the virus.
In addition, building internal immunity is crucial, asserted Dr Mittal.
It becomes crucial to focus on meeting the daily nutritional goals. “This can help strengthen the immune system, which can act as a shield to fight against these health complications. One should try incorporating foods that specifically contain immune-boosting nutrients into their daily diet,” said Mahedvi.
* Engaging in regular exercise to keep the body healthy.
* Getting adequate sleep to support the immune system.
* Managing stress effectively.
* Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of warm fluids.
* Protecting themselves from air pollution, which can exacerbate respiratory issues.
These measures are significant during the flu season, which typically peaks from October to March. These steps can help reduce the risk of contracting the flu and its potential complications.
