The Matunga police have arrested nine people for their alleged involvement in the sale of a three-month-old baby in Karnataka. Among those arrested is the 32-year-old mother of the infant, who sold her child for Rs 1 lakh to secure bail for her jailed husband.
The incident came to light after the woman’s mother-in-law filed a complaint with the police. According to officials, the woman’s husband, who had been arrested in a theft case by the railway police, had discussed the need for bail money with her during a visit to Byculla jail while she was pregnant. Following this, she allegedly decided to sell her baby to raise funds.
“The mother admitted to receiving approximately Rs 1 lakh from the sale of the infant. However, her mother-in-law discovered the transaction and immediately reported it to the police,” an officer said.
Based on the complaint, the Matunga police launched an investigation and tracked the baby through multiple locations, including Ulhasnagar, Surat, Vadodara, and Karnataka. The team eventually arrested eight middlemen allegedly involved in the transaction.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Manisha Sunny Yadav, Sulochana Suresh Sable, Mira Rajaram Yadav, Yogesh Suresh Bhoir, Roshni Sontu Ghosh, Sandhya Arjun Rajput, Madina alias Munni Imam Chavan, Tainaz Shahin Chauhan, and Moinuddin Tamboli.
“Through technical investigations, we traced the suspects and apprehended them on Monday. The infant has been rescued and is now in our custody. We are working to locate and arrest the person who purchased the baby,” said a senior police officer. The accused were presented in court and sent to police custody for further investigation.
