Pune: 5 arrested for murder of watchman’s wife after quarrel over urinating on open plot

The incident happened on around 8 pm on December 27, when a group of around five men allegedly reached near a private property, where Sheetal’s husband Akshay Chavan worked as a watchman.

According to police, the men started urinating at an open plot, part of the property guarded by Akshay.

As Akshay objected to this, leading to a quarrel, the men allegedly pelted stones at Akshay and Sheetal, who also present there. A stone hit Sheetal, leaving her injured, police said adding that one of the men also allegedly opened fire from his country pistol.

After learning about the incident, a team of Lonikalbhor police station rushed to the spot and took Sheetal to a hospital.

An FIR in the matter was lodged under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Indian Arms Act.

Following this, police arrested three accused— Satish Lokhande, Bhanudas Shelar and Ajay Mundhe on charges of attempt to murder. Meanwhile, Sheetal succumbed to her injuries at the hospital on January 1 and the police added sections for murder in the FIR.

On Saturday, two more accused, identified as Mayur Jadhav and Prathamesh Vahile, were arrested from Khed Shivapur area. A court remanded them to police custody till January 7 for further investigation. The other three accused were remanded to judicial custody by the court.

Senior police inspector Rajendra Karankot said, “Sections for murder were invoked in this case after the victim’s death. Five accused have been arrested so far. We have seized a country made pistol from an accused. It is an illegally procured firearm. Accused persons have a previous criminal record. Further investigation is on.”
