In our quest to eat healthy, many of us prefer brown bread over white. While there is not much of a nutritional difference, you mustn’t fall prey to consuming fake brown bread. Several videos circulating on social media hint at adulteration in the manufacturing of brown bread urging consumers to be cautious while buying it. “Commercial brown bread products may not be as wholesome as they claim,” dietitian Shikhar Kumari also claimed in an Instagram post.
Concurring, Jinal Patel, dietitian, Zynova Shalby Hospital Mumbai said that some manufacturers may sell white or maida bread disguised as brown bread, often using misleading labels, ingredient lists, or packaging.
“This marketing tactic can take a heavy toll on one’s overall well-being and lead to health conditions like sudden weight gain, blood sugar spikes, digestive problems, and nutrient deficiencies. Individuals are advised to be cautious and attentive while purchasing brown bread,” said Patel.
How to check for its authenticity?
Make sure that you always check the ingredients list. “If the brown bread contains refined flour instead of whole wheat flour then it’s more likely to be fake brown bread. Choose brown breads with minimal sugar content, and no artificial colour,” said Patel.
Kumari further asserted that one should try and bake their own bread. “Making whole wheat bread at home allows you to have complete control over the ingredients. You can use 100 per cent whole wheat flour and avoid additives like caramel colour,” said Kumari.
Patel said that one of the easiest and most effective ways to detect if your brown bread is fake is by closely examining its texture.
“Real brown bread should be dense in texture and feel moist yet firm at the same time. On the other side, fake brown bread or white bread are light and possess a sponge-like texture. To avoid this, always opt for local bakeries or reputable brands that use quality ingredients while being committed to providing healthy and authentic whole wheat bread,” said Patel.
